Premium Titanium exhaust hanger rods DIY exhaust systems

BOOST Products Titanium exhuast hanger rods in Grade 2

BOOST Products ultralight titanium pipes, bends, flexible joints and exhaust accessories are made of high quality Grade 2 titanium. Unlike other manufacturers, BOOST Products focuses on high quality (grade standard). Especially for titanium products in exhaust systems, it is absolutely necessary to use at least Grade 2 quality standard.

For those building projects where every gram matters, exhaust hangers can be necessary but also unwanted weight. Why not save some of that weight with titanium hanger rods? These rods are significantly lighter than their steel counterparts and can be a nice detail to your exhaust build while adding the performance aspect of it being a lightweight part.

Key benefits and features

  • How hard is it to weld titanium?

Titanium is one of the harder metals to work with when it comes to welding. You'll need to TIG weld here and a 100% Argon purge is recommended to avoid atmospheric contamination. This is important because if not done properly, this causes cracking and ends up failing sometimes easier than steel. In our experience, fabricators say you should use ERTi-2 filler rod for any Grade 2 titanium.

Do I really save that much in weight?

It is actually quite considerable the amount of weight saved when it comes to titanium vs. steel. On average, titanium can weight about 45% less than their 304/316 stainless steel counterparts. For reference, our titanium elbows all weigh less than a single pound - that's less than the weight of a single loaf of bread!

Grade 2 vs Grade 5 titanium

Grade 2 titanium is the type you see the most when it comes to commercial sales. They are found in exhausts, piping and even some checmical equipment. For those wanting high quality metal that is rust resistant and offers plenty of tensile strength, you'll see most using Grade 2. Grade 5 is more for aerospace, aircraft turbines, high strength valves and other complex systems. They have a much higher tensile strength but is not for the casual DIYer. They are extremely difficult to weld with, does not form well and are extremely difficult to machine.

    Some things to consider

  • We use grade 2 titanium for our line of titanium piping products. Grade 2 is the most commonly commercialized version of the types of titanium we see on the market. It's the main industry go-to standard for exhausts, downpipes or intake plumping.
  • Even for an exhaust hanger, we recommend you have experience as a fabricator before undertaking a titanium welding project. They are not the easiest metal to work with - nor is it the cheapest. They are less forgiving when it comes to how it's welded, they can crack easier than steel if the welds are not done properly.
